I read articles on problem solving and learned
about several different categories or angles within problem solving. From my
experience, one of the biggest pieces of common core is that ways in which
problems are addressed. Understanding more about the mental patterns that
students go through when they are thinking about particular problems would help
teachers help their students. Several of
the common core standards that I help elementary students meet deal with
questioning. Making a specific effort to include different levels of questions in
my conversations with students will help them informally practice their problem
solving skills. It is difficult for educators to not develop a “right answer,”
and really consider multiple solutions to one problem. I would use a cause and
effect approach (with that solution, what are all the possible outcomes) to
help them determine the best solution for their situation.
Great point, Pam! Best wishes as you use this approach to develop good critical thinking skills in your students!
